LED ZEPPELIN "Last Stand" 2LP on Toasted Records. Matrix: TRW 1999 A/B/C/D. Led Zeppelin were not given an opportunity to prepare for their last show. The final show in Berlin on July 7th wasn’t even supposed to be the final show of the European tour, but a show in Berlin on July 8th that was on the original itinerary was cancelled. July 7th serves as the final statement of Led Zeppelin only because of the tragic death of drummer John Bonham. An historic show...even though the mighty Zeps were on the verge of exhaustion ...the gig balances on the border of brilliance and sloppyness. The opening numbers are very good, even thrilling. Before "Hot Dog", Robert comments: "We've done 16 towns in 21 days. This is the last concert, so we intend to have a better time, perhaps than we have done before, and if that doesn't bleed something out of the crowd, nothing will." Little did Robert know, it actually was the last concert! Ever! "Trampled Under Foot" is very long and the solo from Pagey is just a little reckless. "Rain Song" and "All My Love" are perfect and very emotional. "Stairway To Heaven" is the longest live version performed on the tour, at 14 minutes! Jimmys solo is very inventive yet fairly sloppy, but that adds to overall charm and interest. "Rock & Roll", the encore is amazing and closes out (on this album anyway) the final Led Zeppelin (original band) concert ever. The Train Kept A Rollin', Nobody's Fault But Mine, Black Dog, In The Evening, The Rain Song, Hot Dog, All My Love, Trampled Underfoot, Since I've Been, Loving You, Kashmir, Stairway To Heaven, Rock & Roll.
